 August 18, 2024: A devastating fire that had been raging in southern Slovenia near Kočevska Reka, close to the UNESCO-protected primeval forest, has finally been brought under control. The fire started on Friday and posed a significant threat to the area. Fire crews have worked tirelessly, and the expected overnight rain is likely to help further contain the situation. Between the 17th of October 2021 and the 13th of October 2024, Slovenia experienced a total of 686 VIIRS fire alerts. In these moments of crisis, we stand with the affected communities and offer our full support to those who have fallen victim to this disaster.
